For the second half of our volunteering abroad episodes; we travel to Afghanistan with Tauranga Anaesthetist Dr Lynette McGaughran. Lynette spent eight weeks in the Khost Maternity Hospital with Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in 2022. In this episode, she discusses the process of getting there and her experience as the sole medical anaesthetist.

Special guest Dr Vanessa Beavis talks leadership, juggling a busy workload and holding the ANZCA Presidency during the pandemic with NZSA President and Podcast host Dr Morgan Edwards.
Dr Vanessa is the immediate past president of ANZCA and is a specialist Anaesthetist in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her clinical interests include perioperative medicine and liver transplant anaesthesia. Prior to her role as ANZCA President she was the Director of Perioperative Services at Auckland City Hospital.

The Combined Scientific Congress (CSC) approaches this October in Wellington; the theme for this fourth episode, where we delve a little into this long-anticipated event with NZSA Podcast host Dr Morgan Edwards. We hear from Scientific Convenor, Dr Dan Frei who takes us behind the scenes of the longest planning period yet and shares some insight into what we can all look forward to and we get to know invited speakers Anaesthesia Journal Editor-in-chief, Prof Andrew Klein and WFSA President Prof Wayne Morriss.

Dr Wayne Morris is the President of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), the first New Zealander in the position. He is a practicing anaesthetist in Christchurch, with extensive experience in medical education, neuroanaesthesia, and obstetric anaesthesia. Dr Wayne discusses his background, time working in global aid, and plans for the future with WFSA.

In this inaugural episode we hear from Dr Sheila Hart - New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists President on what's going on in the NZSA and the NZ Anaesthesia community.  We also get an update from Mike Smith on the AUT Perioperative Practice degree for Anaesthetic Technicians.  And finally Dr Rob Burrell talks to host Dr Morgan Edwards about the environment, sustainability and anaesthesia.
